Cave Rock's Ramp Stays Open All Winter. Your Trailer Seal Decides If You Can Use It.

Where on Lake Tahoe can you back a trailer into the water on a clear Tuesday in January? The list is short, and one of the names on it sits at the bottom of Cave Rock Drive.

On its winter list of public launch ramps, the Lake Tahoe Watercraft Inspection Program shows the Cave Rock ramp open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Most of the lake's other public ramps have closed by now or will close soon. For anyone in Cave Rock Estates with a boat, the season doesn't end in October. It moves to a shorter, quieter schedule that works on different rules than summer.

The rest of the lake is closing its ramps

The calendar for public launches thins out quickly once October ends. Here is what the official sources show for the coming months:

Ramp Status this fall and winter
Cave Rock, Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park Open 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. from September 5 through May 24, apart from the holiday closures listed below
Sand Harbor, Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park Boat ramp closed for the season
Lake Forest, Tahoe City Open through October 31, then closed all of November for dredging
Obexer's Marina, Homewood Listed open 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., November 1 to 30
Tahoe Vista Closed for the season because of low water

Nevada State Parks shows the Sand Harbor boat ramp as "CLOSED FOR THE SEASON." That takes away the other state-run ramp on the Nevada shore. On the north shore, the Tahoe City Public Utility District has scheduled dredging at Lake Forest from November 1 through November 30. Winter ramp operations run by the Tahoe Resource Conservation District move to Obexer's Marina while the work is underway. The North Tahoe Public Utility District has closed the Tahoe Vista ramp for the season because of low water.

So in November, the public winter list comes down to Cave Rock on the East Shore and Obexer's on the West Shore. Obexer's appears on that list only for November. Cave Rock's schedule runs through May 24, closing only on the listed holidays. Private marinas such as Tahoe Keys Marina and Lakeside Marina set their own hours, and the inspection program tells boaters to check with them directly.

The program also lists holiday closures for the winter ramps:

  • Thursday, November 26, 2026, Thanksgiving Day
  • Friday, November 27, 2026
  • Thursday, December 24, 2026, Christmas Eve
  • Friday, December 25, 2026, Christmas Day
  • Friday, January 1, 2027, New Year's Day

Why the ramp is only half the answer

Launching a trailered boat in winter depends on the seal, which the inspection program describes as "a wire with a numbered clip loosely connecting the boat and trailer," attached the last time the boat came out of Lake Tahoe. If that seal is still intact, the boat needs no new inspection and can go straight to a Tahoe launch.

If the seal is gone, winter gets harder. For the 2026 to 2027 season, the Lake Tahoe Watercraft Inspection Program runs winter inspections and decontamination at just one place, the Meyers Inspection Station at 2175 Keetak St. in South Lake Tahoe. It's open on select Wednesdays from October 14 through March 2027, by appointment only and weather permitting. Since 2025, every motorized or trailered boat that gets inspected also has to be decontaminated. The program made that change to protect the lake from invasive golden mussels.

The program sets these terms for a winter appointment:

  1. Book at least 48 hours ahead through the program's winter appointment page.
  2. Pay a $30 deposit, which is refunded once the inspection and decontamination are done.
  3. If you don't show up, or you cancel within 48 hours of the appointment, you lose the deposit.
  4. If snow, bad weather or freezing temperatures keep the station closed, the program contacts boaters who had appointments and refunds them.
  5. Arriving with the boat cleaned, drained and dried cuts decontamination fees by 50 percent.

So in practice, an open ramp in January helps most if the boat came out of the lake in fall with its seal on and the seal has stayed on through storage.

What the Cave Rock ramp offers once you're there

Nevada State Parks describes the Cave Rock launch as one double ramp with a dock between the two lanes and room for more than 40 trailers. The park has three picnic areas: one by the small beach at the south end, one across from the restroom, and one at the north end by the boat ramp. Each has tables and barbecue pits.

The park is open from sunrise to sunset, and the ramp's 4 p.m. close sets the real limit on a winter outing. The posted park rules also say no overnight parking, fires only in the barbecue pits, dogs on leashes no longer than six feet and kept off the beach, and no drones.

Fishing from a winter launch

A quiet ramp is useful for anglers because Lake Tahoe's season doesn't close. Nevada's 2026 to 2027 fishing regulations list Lake Tahoe and its tributaries as open year-round. The limits are five game fish a day and ten in possession, and fishing hours run from one hour before sunrise to two hours after sunset.

The same regulations close a small area right at the launch: Lake Tahoe inside the jetty at the north end of the Cave Rock boat ramp. The state park adds that fishing isn't allowed on the beach or in the boat ramp area. It also notes that the steep shoreline and rocky shoals elsewhere make the park a good place to fish.

On the Nevada Department of Wildlife's Lake Tahoe page, Cave Rock and Sand Harbor are named as productive spots for stocked small rainbow trout. The page describes deep-line trolling, jigging and live minnows as common methods for mackinaw, the lake trout that are Tahoe's deep-water fish, and top-line trolling for rainbows and browns. Regulations change and they vary by water, so read the current rules for yourself. This post is general information, not legal advice, and anglers should check their own situation with the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

If you'd rather not haul your own boat, some charters keep running through the cold months from the south end of the lake. Tahoe Sportfishing fishes year-round from Ski Run Marina for mackinaw, kokanee, brown trout and rainbow trout. Mile High Fishing Charters advertises year-round trips from Tahoe Keys Marina.

The drive down, and the walk up

Getting to the ramp is easier this winter. NDOT's two-year resurfacing of U.S. 50 between Spooner Summit and Stateline has finished paving. What's left is signs, striping, painting the barrier rails and cleaning up the staging areas. Work zones stay at 35 mph, and NDOT expects minimal delays. The project replaced asphalt curbs with concrete curbing built to hold up better against snow removal. NDOT says some sections hadn't been fully resurfaced since 2007, and about 26,000 drivers use the stretch each day.

You can't reach the rock itself from the boat ramp. Nevada State Parks says the Cave Rock Trail can't be accessed from the park, and the trailhead is across the highway, about a quarter mile up Cave Rock Drive. Hikespeak describes the route as 0.9 miles round trip. The trail starts at a sharp bend in the road between a pair of boulders, has no sign, and has parking for about six vehicles. It heads north across a slope above U.S. 50 with open views of the water almost right away. On a winter weekday, a short walk up the trail is a good way to check conditions on the lake before you hitch up.
